one of the biggest champions is that california chamber of commerce. we know it is good for business. and please, organized with the neighborhood bars. there are so many great neighborhood bars in this city that could add that neighborhood element to political organizing. and when you are a district supervisor, it is one thing to have nightclub owners come to you. it is another thing to have neighborhood business owners like bar owners coming to you. we need to organize as a bar owner and that will move us in a positive direction. i am optimistic about the future of night life in this city. i think we have turned a corner. there's a broader and broader consensus that this matters for the broader culture of san francisco. thank you. i'll say first that susan terrence teaches and has taught for many years through the california poets in schools high schools like lowell, francis scott key elementary, and new traditions elementary school. she's currently using a baseball poetry through a graph on the san francisco giants community fund that is really creative, and i'm sure it excites the kids especially around world series time. and she's lived in the richmond district for 16 years. and i'll also call up david volpendesta. he's an author of four books of poetry, also richmond district resident. his translations have appeared in vulcan and a number of journals as well as tomorrow triumphant and clamor of innocence which he co-edited with [speaker not understood]. he also coed ted homeless not helpless, an advocate for many of our special [speaker not understood] groups. i wanted to say the third poet from the richmond, christopher could not be here with us, but we're really honored that david and susan are here with us. could you please come forward with alejandro as well? susan and david, please give us some thought

and i worked in the california legislature and the oregon legislature. and i saw the beginnings of the current law. there are civil rights laws. there is nothing wrong with that, except that the idea was you just get them back on the streets and they're all going to get well. you get them out of the state hospitals, they're all going to get well. well, first of all, they can't handle their medication. they can't handle treatment. they have to be put in a ward or they have to be put under laura's law where their medication is supervised. if you're going to give them a chance to live. and the people who aren't treated are the people who self-medicate and they have a major portion of the street drug clients. they're the people who self-medicate on alcohol. and when i was putting together two major programs in berkeley which were teleconferencing [speaker not understood] berkeley and ucsf on mental health and public policy and mental health and law, and you can look at those programs by going to mental health law symposium, all of them together on the web an
